The Lopez Family

The Lopezes are an influential family with roots in Iloilo, a province in the Visayas in central Philippines. They made their money from businesses such as sugar plantations and shipping.
The founder of ABS-CBN was a fourth-generation Lopez: Eugenio Lopez Sr., son of former Iloilo governor Benito Lopez and brother of former Vice President Fernando Lopez.
Eugenio Lopez Sr., a University of the Philippines and Harvard-educated lawyer, as well as one of the heirs to the Lopez family empire and owner of Chronicle Broadcasting Network, bought Alto Broadcasting System from Antonio Quirino, brother of former President Elpidio Quirino, on February 24, 1957.
When President Ferdinand Marcos declared Martial Law on September 21, 1972, ABS-CBN was one of the stations that were seized by government forces. Lopez’s eldest son and namesake, Eugenio “Geny” Lopez Jr. was imprisoned for supposedly conspiring to assassinate the president. Geny managed to escape and lived in exile in the US.
The station was returned to the Lopezes by then President Corazon Aquino after the People Power Revolution of 1986.
Geny’s eldest child, Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III now heads the station. With other family members, he co-owns ABS-CBN Corporation as well as their other businesses under Lopez, Incorporated.
These family members are the siblings Oscar and Manuel Lopez and Presentacion L. Psinakis, all children of Eugenio Lopez Sr; Oscar’s son, Federico; and Gabby’s sister Regina Paz “Gina” Lopez.
Psinakis is Eugenio Sr.’s only daughter. Manuel, his fourth child, was chairman of the board, and now director of the public utility firm Manila Electric Company. He was appointed Philippine Ambassador to Japan by President Benigno Aquino III. He resigned when Aquino’s term came to an end.
Gina Lopez is the current secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, a cabinet position to which she was appointed by President Rodrigo Duterte. She is not a member of the board of directors of ABS-CBN Corporation.
The Lopezes make the bulk of their money from mass media but their other businesses include power and energy generation and distribution, property development, financial services, and manufacturing.
They were into water services, telecommunications, and tollways.
