rappler.com

Rappler is a relatively new online multimedia platform. It started in 2012.
Aside from publishing news and features, Rappler has an advocacy arm, MovePH, and an investigative section, Newsbreak. Its website also has a “mood meter,” which gauges the reaction of the readers. In 2014, Rappler set up a bureau in Jakarta, Indonesia.
According to analytics website alexa.com, rappler.com ranked as the 14th top site in the Philippines as of November 8. It is the fourth top media site, following abs-cbn.com, inquirer.net and gmanetwork.com.
Rappler, Incorporated is owned by Rappler Holdings Corporation, whose biggest shareholders include media company Dolphin Fire Group with 31.21 percent shares, Rappler president Maria Ressa with 23.77 percent shares, digital company Hatchd Group and Benjamin So, with 17.86 shares each, according to the company’s 2015 General Information Sheet filed at the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Before founding Rappler, Maria Ressa was ABS-CBN’s News and Current Affairs head for six years. She also served as CNN International’s Jakarta bureau chief.
The Securities and Exchange Commission in a Jan. 11 2018 decision voided Rappler’s certificate of incorporation, saying the social media news network engaged in a “deceptive scheme” to skirt foreign equity restrictions in mass media.
Rappler called the decision “a blow to press freedom in the Philippines.”
